World Consumer Rights Day 2024: Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers Debate and Dialogue Series

Breakthroughs in generative AI have taken the digital world by storm. The technology is set to have an enormous impact on people’s lives, in the way we work, communicate, gather information and much more. It will also have serious implications for consumer safety and digital fairness. Misinformation, privacy violations, and discriminatory practices are concerns, as well as how AI-driven platforms can spread false information and perpetuate biases. We must move quickly to address these issues for a fair and responsible AI.

For World Consumer Rights Day 15 March 2024 - Consumers International will lead a global conversation on fair and responsible AI for consumers. Our unique Debate and Dialogue Series will bring together leaders from across government, business, civil society and international organisations. We will explore priority topics such as how we can empower and protect consumers through clear information and transparency and where lines of responsibility sit when consumers are harmed.

See below for an overview of interactive sessions. Register now as places are limited.

Registration is by approval only. All participants must adhere to the Consumers International Event Code of Conduct.

Fighting scams, deepfakes and misinformation in the age of generative AI
Tuesday 12 March 2024

In a world where people can distinguish between human- and AI-written text at best half the time, is it fair to expect consumers to reliably identify genuine and fake content? In a world where US consumers lost almost $1bn a month in 2023 to fraud, what must be done to protect against manipulation that is increasingly sophisticated – and produced at scale? In a world where a multinational company is scammed to the tune of HK$200 million by a deepfake video of its own employees, are businesses adequately prepared for the risk that generative AI presents to their operations?

This panel of leading consumer advocates, experts, regulators and businesses – convened for World Consumer Rights Day 2024 – will make the call for urgent, coordinated and sustained action for Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers.

Places are by approval only and reserved for those committed to marketplace change which protects consumers.

The session will be recorded & interpretation will be available in French, Spanish and Arabic.

What constitutes a responsible data policy for generative AI?
Wednesday 13 March 2024

Did you know that a single web crawler, running since 2008, has formed a dataset used to train two out of three of the biggest large language models (LLMs) on the market? This means that an individual database has become one of the single most important sources of training data for generative AI that millions of consumers interact with each day.

To help consumer advocates formulate a responsible data policy for generative AI, it’s helpful to take a deep dive into how generative AI models are built, trained and – starting with the data behind them.

This session will provide an interactive opportunity for consumers advocates to learn about different aspects of data policy, why they are important to the future of the digital economy, and what we can do to ensure that AI is fair and responsible for consumers.

Places are by approval only and reserved for those committed to marketplace change which protects consumers.

The session will be recorded & interpretation will be available in French, Spanish and Arabic.
