She highlights Chile’s efforts in sustainable consumption, the fight against greenwashing, and the need for greater transparency and stronger policies to support informed decisions.
European Commission
European Commissioner, Michael McGrath, highlights the importance of a consumer-oriented transition to sustainable lifestyles—where affordability and sustainability go hand in hand.
"On this World Consumer Rights Day 2025, we reaffirm that affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy is a fundamental right. Beyond just providing electricity to consumers, sustainable energy unlocks the fundamental right to equitable access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Yet, over 1.18 billion people live in energy poverty and nearly 1 billion lack access to electricity in healthcare facilities, and despite a 20% decline in global energy prices in 2024, benefits have not been shared equally.
As we approach COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the focus is shifting towards resilience and future-proofing our energy systems. With global energy demand set to rise by 25% by 2040 and a population of 9.8 billion by 2050, integrated sustainable solutions are more urgent than ever. This transition must be cost-effective, unlocking investment in renewable energy through AI and data-optimized solutions for energy storage.
At UNDP, we are advancing the energy transition through innovative financing, digital transformation, and strategic partnerships. This World Consumer Rights Day, let’s commit to a future where clean, affordable energy is a foundation for development. No one should have to choose between powering their home and putting food on the table. By increasing investments and advocating for the right policies, we can make sustainable energy a reality for everyone."
"SEforALL stands with Consumers International in advancing people-centred energy transitions that ensure everyone has access to sustainable energy and empower individuals to actively shape its direction. A truly just and inclusive transition requires equipping consumers with the knowledge, resources, and choices to fully benefit from essential services that enhance well-being and free up time for economic activities, particularly for women.
Access to reliable information that helps consumers make informed energy choices is a fundamental consumer right. At SEforALL, we believe that ensuring transparency, education, and access to knowledge empowers individuals to actively participate in the energy transition and benefit from sustainable solutions. Governments, businesses, and civil society must work together to ensure universal access to clean energy and put people at the heart of the energy transition. Now is the time to act—to accelerate policies, investments, and innovations that make sustainable energy a reality for all."
