Consumer participation in standardisation

International standards are used to define international good practice in companies and organisations and are developed through a multi-stakeholder process including national standards bodies, industry and civil society. They are referenced in international trade agreements and often form the basis for national regulations.

Consumers International has liaison status with the Consumer Policy Committee of International Standards Organisation (ISO) and has the right to propose new work items that can lead to the development of new standards.  Over the years we have supported the development of many standards on subjects such as energy, mobile payments and corporate social responsibility. We have also helped to provide training in the standardisation process.
